Through the past 5 weeks the Sunrise Team have been in competition mode as we have just completed our second annual table tennis tournament. The excitement and staff rivalry was at an all-time high as the tournament began. Each week we would draw names randomly to find out who was playing in each category. We had Men’s Singles, Ladies Singles, Men’s Doubles, Ladies Doubles and Mixed Doubles. We had great team participation including the company director and some amazing players, some might even say semi-pro! It was game on and the intensity grew with some even bringing in lucky t-shirts to play in, some had preparation rituals before playing and a little bit of banter to throw the opponent off their game. There is no doubt that the Sunrise Table tournament was great fun and beneficial on many levels. It has been known that table tennis in the workplace can not only increase productivity and boost staff moral but studies done by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, specifically points out that table tennis:
- Increases concentration and alertness
- Stimulates brain function
- Develops tactical thinking skills
- Develops hand / eye coordination
- Provides aerobic exercise
- Provides social and recreational interaction
The tournament was done not only for the benefit of a little exercise and friendly competition but also to raise money for charity. At £1 per game we managed to raise over £50 for The Brain Tumour Charity. The Brain Tumour Charity is the UK’s largest dedicated brain tumour charity committed to fighting brain tumours on all fronts.
