Welcome to the first edition of the IT Insider.
I’ll be blogging on a weekly basis, discussing what’s happening within the IT industry, and how IT professionals are affected. The sorts of issues I intend to look at are:
- The future of the IT department, and how it is evolving from a purely technical function, into a more strategic, business systems function.
- Some of the challenges facing IT professionals, and how to deal with them.
- The skills needed to progress in IT, and, in particular, what’s involved in moving from a technical to a management role.
- Advice on IT careers, CVs, and how to apply for IT roles – as well as things to avoid!
I’ll also be writing about a particular interest of mine – business psychology – and be looking at the various ways in which this can assist with personal and organisational effectiveness. I do think that IT Departments are often misunderstood, or get a bad press. Much of this is down to unfair expectations, I think, rather than poor performance. I’ve been lucky enough to work with some very talented individuals whose contributions just haven’t been recognized outside the IT Department.
Hopefully this blog will go some way to redressing the balance, by promoting IT in a more positive way.
If there’s anything specific that you’d like me to address, or if you have any comments on what I’ve written, please let me know and I’ll do my best to respond.
